A Note From Our Board:
December, 2022
Sage City Symphony had an auspicious start to our 2022–2023 season–our 50th year!
We marked the 30th anniversary of Conductor Michael Finckel with a special event at the Park-McCullough House in N. Bennington on October 23, and then we opened our season on November 13 with a commission by Geoffrey Gee for piano and orchestra, a symphonic work by Paul Hindemith, and a string piece by Florence Price.
On our upcoming February program are works by Bach, Mozart, and Bartók. Our March “youth” concert will include a college-aged pianist playing Schumann. In May 2023, we will feature a symphony written by our founding director, Louis Calabro, among other works.
Unfortunately, the cost of these events is unremitting. For example, we hoped to bring in a special piano for the Gee, but when we were quoted a price that was twice the previous cost, we had to forgo the better piano. Costs for the services of our concertmaster, which are entirely fair, have also gone up. We have been avoiding works requiring a harp because that is also a large expense. We are eternally grateful to Bennington College for the use of Greenwall Auditorium at no charge, and we have sought and received much- appreciated grants and continually seek more.
Sage City Symphony is a special musical treasure, and we wish to be here for many
years to come. For this reason, and because we need to, we have no choice but to join the parade of seasonal solicitations.
